Math Centers ~ Shapes

During Math Centers, our students are divided up into groups and each group does something different.  Students rotate through these groups as needed to review and practice different Math skills.  Some of our Math Centers are shown below.

Making shapes with rubber bands and Geoboards.

Shape Puzzles
One side of the page shows students where to put each shape piece.  The other side is harder.  It does not show students where to put the pieces.  They have to use their problem solving skills to figure it out on their own.

Eating 2-D Shapes

We have been learning about two-dimensional (2-D) shapes.
One day our students got a chance to eat these shapes.
Ritz crackers = circles
Townhouse crackers = ovals
Doritoes chips = triangles
Triscuit crackers = squares
Club crackers = rectangles
oyster crackers = hexagons
In their Interactive Math Journals, students identified the shapes, then drew representations of the shapes and labeled them.  That was the day they were asked to look at food shapes for their homework.  These photos show what we did at school.

February is Dental Health Month

Thank you so much to Mrs. Corbett for visiting the class to talk about Dental Health.  Mrs. Corbett works for Heartland Dental, who provided the materials for this visit, as well as a FREE toothbrush, toothpaste, and dental flosser for each child in the class.

Our Student of the Week got to dress up as a dentist.

Our "dentist" counted the number of teeth in one of our students.

Using pretend dental floss, our "dentist" demonstrated how to use dental floss to clean between our teeth.  Thank you to these three students who pretended to be teeth for this demonstration.

THANK YOU SO MUCH to Heartland Dental
and Mrs. Corbett, for this visit!

Retelling Ribbons

One of our Literature (Reading) standards in the Common Core State Standards states, "With prompting and support, our students will retell familiar stories, including key details".  Our students have been using Retelling Ribbons to practice retelling some of the STAR Books they have heard many times.  The Retelling Ribbons have pictures of the following aspects of the story, which the students must remember to retell: setting, characters, problem, solution, sequence of events (beginning, middle, and ending), as well as the main idea or lesson learned.

70 years!

Mrs. Doiron's parents, Eugene and Joyce Schrader, have been married for 70 years!  The whole family celebrated on March 2, 2014 at the church in Northfield, Minnesota, where they were married on March 2, 1944.

Mrs. Pearson, Intern

Mrs. Robin Pearson is a full-time intern from Florida State College at Jacksonville.  Here she is teaching our students.

Valentine's Day

Our students enjoyed opening the Valentine cards their classmates gave them.  Thank you to all the families who helped their children prepare cards and treats for the class!  Thank you to the families who provided cake and juice for our Valentine's Day Party!

100th Day of School Party

On the 100th Day of School our students had a party which included 100 little cupcakes, 100 little cups of juice, 100 little cookies, 100 baby carrots, 100 apple slices, and 100 grapes.

100th Day of School Necklaces

Monday, February 3rd was our 100th day of school. One of the activities was making necklaces out of 100 Cheerios.  Students counted their Cheerios by tens or twenties.  I wonder if any of these necklaces made it home intact, or if they were all eaten on the way home ....
