Play Day 2013

Our kindergarten Play Day was held on Wednesday, May 29, 2013.  Mrs. Brown-Smith, our Physical Education teacher planned and orchestrated the event.  All children went home with a "Play Day Participation" ribbon at the end of the day.

Every class displayed a poster with their "Virtue Word".

Football throw to knock over two-liter bottles containing sand.
Hey, you could do this at home!

We all loved the "Chicken Journey".
(It's sort of like "Duck, Duck, Goose.)

This is the "Mustang Race" with a horse and driver.

We love cup stacking!

Playing with a parachute is so fun.
We were thankful for beautiful, breezy weather!

Even kindergartners can jump over hurdles.

We got lots of T-ball practice.

Thank you to our PTA for the yummy popsicles after all that activity!

Talent Show

On Thursday, May 23rd, ten of our students performed in the Annual Merrill Road Elementary School Talent Round-up.  They played "Old McDonald" and "Baa Baa Black Sheep" to a very enthusiastic crowd.  Mrs. Doiron is so proud of her budding musicians!

Practicing for Readers' Theater

On Monday, June 3rd, we will perform a Readers' Theater for our families.  Here are some photos of our students practicing reading "The Three Billy Goats Gruff".  Our students are especially enjoying reading the troll's part and the big billy goat's part with LOUD voices, and reading the part of the little billy goat with small voices.  You may notice that our scripts are written with each part highlighted a different color.  We can't wait for our families to come watch!

What do you think?

Field Trip to the Jacksonville Zoo

On Tuesday, May 14th, our class FINALLY went to the Jacksonville Zoo.  (The trip was originally scheduled for April 4th, but was postponed due to rain.)  Our students have been learning about the classes of animals ~ mammals, birds, reptiles, amphibians, fish, and insects.  As they observed animals in the zoo, they identified in which class those animals belonged.

After touring the zoo and eating lunch, we went to the Education Center, where children got to pet a snake, chinchilla, and lizard.

Thank you so much to our parent chaperons for spending the day with us!

Story Problems

In Math, our students are working on addition and subtraction.  Students are learning to listen carefully to story problems, determine if they should add or subtract, then draw out the problem and write the equation.  We enjoy using our individual white boards and markers to practice these skills.

Mother's Day Tea 2013

On Friday, May 10th, we had our annual Mother's Day Tea.  Mothers and Grandmothers came to school to enjoy refreshments and take a look at the students' Writing Journals, Reader's Response Journals, Reading Logs, Independent Reading Books, Math Journals, Science Journals, Writing Folders, and Poetry Books.

Ouch.  She fell off her bike and got some nasty scrapes.

Mrs. Doiron's Handbell Choir entertained the ladies with several handbell songs, then students went to outdoor recess, then lunch.  We appreciate all of those Moms and Grandmas who were able to take time out of their busy day to attend our Mother's Day Tea.
