We had a great field trip to the Jacksonville Zoo on Monday, March 30, 2015. A big thank you goes out to Mrs. Lanier, Mrs. Sanders, Mrs. Whitehead, and Mrs. Wollitz, who served as parent chaperones. Our students really impressed zoo visitors, as we discussed which "class" each animal was in. For example, as we looked at the zebra, Mrs. Doiron asked students in which "class" the zebra is in. Students responded that the zebra is a mammal. When asked how they knew it was a mammal, our students replied that a zebra has fur or hair on its body and gives milk for its young. While looking at the alligators, our students answered that the alligators are reptiles. How do we know that? The children stated that the alligators have backbones, dry scales, and are cold-blooded. Our young scientists have a wealth of knowledge about amphibians, birds, fish, insects, mammals, and reptiles!
