Writing as punishment

Several years ago, the National Council of Teachers of English published a statement rejecting the idea of parents making their children write sentences as  punishment. (http://www.ncte.org/positions/statements/writingaspunishment) Most teachers agree that using writing as punishment may cause children to think of all writing as punnishment. Even in kindergarten, we spend a lot of time on writing (not handwriting). We want our students to LOVE writing, and if they are punished by having to write, they may not enjoy it as much as we had hoped.  If you are punishing your child by making him/her write sentences, I hope you will reconsider it and try something else. If you have questions or concerns, please don't hesitate to contact me.
