During the month of January, our "Math Every Day" curriculum includes ESTIMATION AND MEASUREMENT. Using dry white rice, we use a scoop and funnel to fill containers. For example, after we determined that container "B" (salad dressing bottle) held 17 scoops, students tried to determine whether container "C" (peanut butter jar) held more or less rice.
Please let your child do this ESTIMATION AND MEASUREMENT at home. Gather several empty containers, get some rice, a scoop, and a funnel. You will want to use a 9" X 13" cake pan as a "spill box" like the blue one we have at school. What a great idea for the kids on a rainy day!
